More Than a Job: Why a Career in Disability Support Matters

At BRSI, our staff support individuals in living full and meaningful lives within the community. That can mean helping someone learn a new skill, supporting them through a challenge, or simply being part of the everyday moments that many of us take for granted.

One of the most unique parts of this work is the opportunity to build genuine relationships. Staff often support the same small group of individuals consistently, which allows trust and connection to grow over time. These relationships become the foundation for helping individuals feel safe, supported, and confident in their daily lives.

No two days are exactly the same. One day might involve helping someone prepare a meal or attend an appointment. Another might mean heading out into the community for an activity they love. Whether it’s attending an event, enjoying a hobby, or simply getting out and experiencing something new, working at BRSI means leading the way in creating opportunities within the community.

This kind of work also develops skills that are valuable throughout any career: communication, problem-solving, patience, and leadership. Staff learn how to support independence while respecting each person’s choices, preferences, and goals.

Perhaps the most powerful part of working in disability support is seeing the impact of your work over time. The small moments add up! Learning something new, overcoming a challenge, or celebrating a personal achievement. Being part of those milestones is something that stays with you.

A career in this sector isn’t always easy. It requires dedication, compassion, and a willingness to learn. But for many people, it becomes some of the most meaningful work they will ever do.

At BRSI, we are proud of the staff who bring their commitment, creativity, and care to their work every day. They help ensure that the individuals we support are not only cared for, but truly included in their community and able to live lives that reflect their interests and goals.

Championship Moments: Experiencing the Grey Cup Together

Some of the most meaningful moments at BRSI aren’t big programs or formal events - they’re the moments that bring joy, excitement, and connection to the people we support.

Recently, a few of our residents who are huge football fans had the chance to see the Grey Cup in person. It happened to fall on one of the coldest days of the year, but that didn’t stop our team! Staff bundled everyone up and made the trip so these residents could experience something they had been excited about for a long time.

The smiles in the photos say it all.

For many sports fans, seeing the Grey Cup up close is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Being able to stand there, take photos, and share that excitement together created memories that will last for years.

This wasn’t the first football experience our residents have enjoyed. In the past, staff have also taken residents to a Saskatchewan Roughriders game, where they got to experience the atmosphere of a live game; sitting in the stands, hearing the crowd, and cheering along with thousands of other fans.

Moments like these may seem simple, but they are incredibly meaningful. They create opportunities for connection, community participation, and shared experiences that everyone deserves to enjoy.

At BRSI, our staff go above and beyond every day to help the people we support stay connected to the things they love — whether that’s sports, community events, or simply spending time together doing something special.

Sometimes, the smallest moments end up meaning the most.
